CERT WORKSHOP APPLICANTS ONLY ============================= Which area of security interests you? ------------------------------------- What security interventions have you experienced? ------------------------------------------------- How do you intend to use the knowledge gained at the workshop? -------------------------------------------------------------- ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES ====================================== A description of your current employer, your position, your duties and responsibilities, and how they relate to current and future data networking activities in your country* ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I am working with Warid Telecom Uganda. They are a national operator offering mobile voice and data (GPRS), fixed voice, and Internet and data services. I am working as an assistant manager IP core operations and maintenance. I manage the NGN IP/MPLS routing, switching and transport core. This includes monitoring performance, designing and implementing changes during network expansion, managing relationships with equipment vendors and troubleshooting. I oversee the implementation of data and Internet links for retail, corporate and ISP clients using fibre, microwave and WiMAX links. My duties help to provide NGN based data and voice services to may businesses and institutions in all parts of the country. Given that our company is a late entrant into the market, we have decided to operate in many previously un-served areas of the country as far as data and Internet connectivity is concerned, hence improving the quality of life of many up-country communities. We believe that by harnessing different types of mobile and fixed access technologies we can achieve the goal of connecting people, communities and institutions to the information superhighway at a very affordable cost. A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems, networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We use Cisco routers and switches for the ISP and data core. We also use Redback routers and a Foundry switch for the aggregation of the WiMAX network. We use Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 and Solaris 10 for the ISP servers together with qmail, apache, mysql, Cisco Network Registrar, nagios and cacti for running network services for the ISP and data network. We also use Huawei routers and switches for the GSM IP/MPLS network, which was formerly supported by a managed services provider. Scope of your institution (check all categories that apply)* ------------------------------------------------------------ Commercial Network Provider : Approximate number of full time staff at your institution* ---------------------------------------------------------- 300 How your training and current work prepare and qualify you for the track you wish to attend* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have attended various training courses in network and system administration, telecommunication networks, and Unix/Linux system administration. i have attained a CCNA and CCNP switching certification, although they have both expired since. I am currently handling routing, switching and system administration for the Warid Telecom IP core. My training and current work will enable me to gain maximumly from the course due to the exposure I currently have to IP routing. How you expect to use the knowledge you gain at the workshop after you return to your country* ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The training I will gain will give me a unique and fortunate opportunity to appreciate the challenges and immense benefits that IP offers through the enabling of next generation telecom networks and the Internet. The use of IP based technologies such as BGP, MPLS, OSPF, SIP, SNMP as well as open standards lower the initial and running costs of telecom networks. This ensures that data networks offering voice, data and Internet access are available to a wider range of people, which is one of the key needs of developing countries, along with education, roads, safe water and good health. By helping to build lower cost and affordable data networks in Uganda I will be helping to contribute to the development of the country. The workshop will also enable me to train my colleagues in Uganda. If you have previously attended AfNOG or INET Workshops for Developing Countries Year and track you attended --------------------------- 2003 . Scalable Internet Services A precise description of how you have used the training you have received in the past ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have worked in Uganda Telecom and implemented email, web, DNS, database, and SNMP monitoring servers, based on open source Unix/Linux software for many institutions and businesses. This lowered their total cost of communication and operation. I also managed Uganda Telecom and Warid Telecom ISP servers which enabled them to provide email, web, ftp, DNS and databse servers for their clients. The significant advances in networking which have occurred in your country specifically because of your knowledge and effort --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have installed Unix, FreeBSD, Redhat and SuSE Linux servers for over 200 institutions and businesses in Uganda. These servers have run email, web, database, ftp and mrtg services. This enables lower costs of communication and operation for these institutions and businesses. I have also registered over 50 domain names for institutions and businesses in Uganda. FINANCIAL INFORMATION ====================== Are you are requesting financial aid from the AfNOG Workshop for attending the workshop and meetings, or for travel costs?* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Requested aid to cover the attendance fees. Explain why you are asking for financial assistance. How will your organisation and your country benefit from your training? What other sources of funding have you approached, and what were the results? ------------------------------------------------------------------- I would really like to attend the advanced routing workshop. However I do not have enough money to cover the full expenses. I can come up with the travel expenses and I can get accommodation with a relative in Dar-Es-Salam. I would like to request for funds to cover the meals expenses, workshop, tutorial and Afnog meeting attendance fees. My organization and country will benefit from my training because of the knowledge gained in improved routing which helps to build highly available, QoS aware and user responsive data networks, using the available network resources. I am talking to my organization, but i can only have concrete discussions with them after getting a firm offer from the Afnog Secretariat, and this is not a very hopeful option since there has been no company budget for training in the last 2 years. I have also started saving my own personal funds for the travel expenses. How will the finances be paid?
